Fresh Exhibition

I will be dropping my work of at the Beetroot Gallery in Derby tomorrow in time for the new Design Factory associate exhibition.

This exhibition shows new and emerging designer maker talent. I will be showing my interior and fashion accessory collection along with other associate designer makers in what is set to be a very exciting exhibition.

If your in the area make sure you go and check it out, and if not its still worth a visit. Draycot in Derbyshire and the area around it is beautiful.

I will be exhibiting some new pieces, which shows the inspiration behind the wall flowers as well as one of my very large pieces, all made by hand using a variety of different techniques including fabric manipulation, laser cutting and hand stitching.

The large piece named Morrocan Wall is directly influenced by my trip to Morocco and looks at pattern on pattern, it’s an amalgamation of natural organic forms layered with manmade geometric shapes. The main inspiration came from a trip to Morocco where I looked at schools and mosques in the old city. One school in particular had an area covered with beautiful and colourful geometric mosaics but had been left and plants had started to grow over the wall. This is my interpretation of this wall.

The pieces used the geometric structured forms and juxtaposed these next to the organic floral patterns. The work I have created, echo’s the on going battle between the organic, uncontrolled, wildness of nature compared to the measured rigidness of manmade geometric patterns which represents that no matter how beautiful the man made pattern is, nature and will always take back the space.

Dame Kelly Holmes

Last night I was lucky enough to meet Dame Kelly Holmes. She is the double olympic gold medal winner who has now set up a health and fitness program with The Village Hotel Gyms.

It was a great night hearing her inspirational talk about her ups and downs during her carrier and it was something I really needed to hear after having a bad day. I was delighted at how personable Kelly was and at the end of the evening went over and said hi and showed her some of my work.

My business was set up with help form the Princes Trust and Kelly works closely with the Trust supporting all their brilliant work. She was interested in what I had been doing since I received my development loan and was especially impressed when I said I had shown my work at the ICFF in New York and the Interior Lifestyle show in Tokyo.

This is the card she signed for me saying congratulations and keep up the great work. This is now being pinned up in my studio next to the mood board for the new Eco-friendly range being launched at 100% Design this September.

I got the chance to say a massive thank you to Kelly this morning while I was doing my morning workout and said I was now off to have a productive day. She said, "when things are a struggle it just makes you more determined to try harder and prove to everyone you have what it takes."..... and that is what I will do.

Thank you again to Kelly

Lorna Syson Spotted by Urban Sherp at ICFF 2010

A big thank you to Urban Sherp for featuring me in their blog. I met Rebecca in New York at ICFF and had a lovely chat with her about how Lorna Syson Textiles is going Eco-friendly, and yes we have managed to achieve this goal a lot quicker than first thought! We are now bringing out a new complementary collection which is completely Eco-friendly!

Lorna Syson’s Stunning Sculptural Textiles

Written by Urban Sherp on July 9th, 2010
Who: Lorna Syson Textiles – UK
Where: Lorna Syson – £100 – £3999, in a variety of colors & sizes.
Why We Love It: These ‘Wall Flowers’ by textile artist Lorna Syson are anything but. We fell in love with the rich colors, the vibrancy and complete originality of these sculptural wall hangings. They truly are stunning.
Made of 100% wool, sued and silk, the textiles are screen printed or digitally printed with patterns designed by Lorna or in solid colors.  The petals are then laser cut and meticulously hand woven to create the 3-D form. One piece can take up to a week to create.
At ICFF, Lorna mentioned that her goal was to source an entirely sustainable collection by 2015. She has far surpassed that target date and will be presenting a completely ‘ec0-friendly’ collection at 100% Design in London this September – can’t wait!
For a taste of Lorna’s stunning collection with a smaller sticker price, check out her collection of accessoriesand pillows – the pillows are filled with 100% recycled wool that’s naturally resistant to dust mites, so is great for people with allergies.

BIG BANG BOOM

I don't know if you are familiar with the work of BLU but they have created a number of animations which are great! Check out their new video

Design Centre, Chelsea Harbor

I took a visit to Chelsea Harbor last week and went around the Design Centre. I thought it place was amazing, my first visit and definitely not my last. There are some beautiful shops selling the most luxurious fabrics, I can see why it is an interior designers dream.

They have some enchanting sheep sculptures by illustrator/designer Nataile Ferstendik. They are made from rolled up pages of second hand books. I then had chance to look around the area at the Conran hotel and the harbor itself! Really nice area full of classic design pieces. I definitely recommend a good look!

Interior Lifestyle Show, Japan

I recently showed my work with BEDG in Japan at the Interior Lifestyle Show. The feedback I received has been brilliant and the Japanese are loving the flowers! Here is an image of the stand

Francesca Crow

I was going through blogs the other day and came across one set up by a friend of mine Frankie (Francesca Crow). We met in New york in Jan 2008 when we were both doing placements out there and living in the Webster apartments. I was working for DVF in the printed textile department and Frankie was working for Donna Karan in the knitwear.

She has put up examples of her photography, sketch books, drawings and garments she did for her final collection at London College of Fashion where she graduated with a 1st, even after having her appendix burst whilst she was working on her final collection!

To me Frankie's style really reflects her personality and her blog really did make me smile. From the images you are able to see the quality of craftsmanship in her work down to the finest detail and see the passion and enthusiasm Frankie has for all things couture fashion!

She is currently working with Mary Katrantzou who sells  her beautiful dresses at Browns

I have added a couple of my favorite images but make sure you check out her blog!
