When time zones play tricks on you

The highlight to the day was meeting the other designers who are showing with BEDG as well as seeing Emma who helped me put up my degree show and who was out in NYC at ICFF doing a placement with Anne Kyyro Quinn.
We were playing about with how we were planning on displaying the cushions.
After a pretty tough day we were really happy to get back and heading out for some dim sum in china town, the food in this city is amazing!

Today was also the first day that Rocket St George are showing at the Spirt of Summer show at Olympia, London. It is on until the 16th of May and they have a couple of my flowers on their stand

ICFF prep begins

After having such an amazing and busy day yesterday its not surprising we slept in late, so we went for brunch at an NYC dinner. It has been a really grey day and with a massive fire on east 14th street this morning there was a smokey smell to the east village.
We went up the 34th street to head over to the ICFF to see how the show was looking and between penn station and the Javits exhibition centre I walked past the webster apartments which is where I used to live when I was out here on my placement!

The Javits centre is HUGE, as well as ICFF there is a stationary show on called Surtex so lots of stands being set up and carpets being laid down. We found my space and spent the afternoon putting the flowers up, this means that all the walls are now done and we just need to dress the stand itself.

We then went to dinner at the Thai restaurant called Thai select, with one of the other exhibitors which was around the corner which we always used to go to on Sunday evenings when I was living at the webster, I'd been telling Hana how amazing the food was so I was really pleased that everyone's meals lived up to my memory

After dinner we walked up through times square to go to a hotel on 55th street where our host was playing a DJ set.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK... tomorrow

So, the bags are packed (almost) I've got myself three very large suitcases with my clothes and textile pieces for ten days in the City and the ICFF exhibition. I've been on the phone to Hana for most of the morning discussing what the whether is going to be like out there and what we should pack!
We've also found a website called Metropolis mag which has a feature called  The Ultimate ICFF events guide, which is very exciting to see the parties and events!

Here is the screen grab of Lorna Syson Textiles on the ICFF exhibitor list. Unfortunately the website is still wrong, this is not good and I hope my follow up emails will mean this is changed ASAP

Will keep you updated with everything while we out in NYC!

Design Factory News

I am a member of Design factory. Here is the latest news story

Lorna Syson's gone international!
Categories: Design Factory Member News , Exhibitions

After her successful exhibitions at the Ideal Home Show in London and then the British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate, Design Factory associate member Lorna Syson still has no time to rest - now she's preparing for her trip to New York!

Lorna is exhibiting at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair: Saturday 15th - Tuesday 18th May 2010 at Jacob K Jarvits Convention Centre, New York City.
You can read all about it on her blog here. Lorna will also be helping to style the stand at the Fabric Fantasia exhibition, which is on while Lorna is in New York.

For more information about the show, visit http://www.icff.com/page/home.asp

Lorna has also been given the opportunity to be part of the contemporary British design debut at the Japanese Interior Lifestyle Show in Tokyo from Wednesday 2nd - Friday 4th June 2010. Lorna is sending over a collection of her wall flowers to be used to dress the British stand, where she will also provide a piece for an extra exhibition within the show called 'Visions of a  Modern Heritage'.

6 days until departure and I'm meeting Sir Terence Conran

Its only 9.30 and already I have had a very exciting morning! Set aside the fact on the ICFF website my name and website are spelt Lorna Syon instead of Syson (which should be changing as we speak) I have spoken to the organisers of the Fabric Fantasia exhibition and they have asked myself and Hana (because we have experience in fashion) to help with the styling of the stand.

It should be an amazing exhibition, the 2D models are being created by designer Susan Woods, I'm heading over to her studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Dumbo on the 11th of May to see how the pieces are coming along. She is creating a series of 15-20 free-standing life-sized figurines made from used and found materials such as scrap metal, drift wood, timber, cardboard etc.

The person in charge of the styling is a MA fashion design graduate from the RCA called Stefan Orschel-Read. He is an acclaimed London-based British fashion designer who has agreed to create the styling of the figures in-situ artistic installation pieces.

I have also been informed that on the Saturday and Sunday we are having breakfast and talks with Hugely famous and amazing designer Conran! This is such an amazing opportunity. He is there to support the British designers who are showing at ICFF this year

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

It's now 7 days until I head off to New York with Hana! We are both ridiculously excited, I've already got back in contact with some of the girls who are still living out there from my placement year where I worked for DVF in the super cool meat packing district!

I'm already planning repeat trips to my favourite lunch spots in Chelsea market, and Just Salad, not sure there are going to be enough lunch times!

On the left a sneaky peak of how I am planning to dress my model with my interior pieces and fabrics for the Fabric Fantasia exhibition at the ICFF. The model compliments my interior ranges and also give me an opportunity to use my interior and fashion pieces in a different way in a professional setting

Getting excited about going to NEW YORK!

I'm getting really excited about ICFF! It is now 12 days until I jet off to New York City with Hana Moss! We are really lucky because we have found a really cool looking place to stay in the East Village with AirBnb,  I haven't been back to New York since i finished my placement with Diane Von Furstenberg in their printed textiles department over two years ago! I'm getting excited to go back to some of our favourite places such as Piano's and Max Fish Bar!

At ICFF I am showing with BEDG, we are group of British designers who are representing British Interior design in the USA. I have been really lucky that the chamber of commerce has supported me by giving me a grant to cover the cost of the stand!

It has been a massive challenge to work out the best way to dress my large 3m by 1.5m stand, but with a lot of research and to scale drawings I think I have now cracked it.... (pictures will follow to show once the stand has been set up)

Now its just the case of working out how much baggage Virgin Atlantic will let me take and how best to pack to make sure everything stays a pristine as when I packed them as well as keeping under the weight limit and being able to carry and transport things once I get to New York!
